Bethpage State Park’s Black Course, carved into the sandy soil of Long Island, New York, stands as one of the most demanding and revered public golf courses in the United States. Designed in 1936 by A.W. Tillinghast, the Black was envisioned as a brute, a course that would challenge even the most seasoned players with its punishing bunkers, narrow fairways, and relentless length. A sign near the first tee famously warns: “The Black Course is an extremely difficult course which we recommend only for highly skilled golfers.”
The allure of Bethpage Black lies in its raw, unrelenting character. There are no frills, just a pure test of golf. Towering oaks frame tight corridors, while elevated greens demand precision and nerve. Holes like the par-4 5th, with its sweeping dogleg and cavernous bunkers, and the par-4 15th, a downhill gauntlet flanked by trouble, have become iconic in their own right. The course’s rugged charm and democratic accessibility have earned it a cult following among amateurs and professionals alike.
Bethpage Black made history in 2002 as the first truly public course to host the U.S. Open, a feat it repeated in 2009. It also welcomed the world for the 2019 PGA Championship and is set to host the Ryder Cup in 2025, further cementing its place on golf’s grandest stage.
