The National Golf Club’s Old Course, perched along the dramatic cliffs of Cape Schanck on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, is a masterpiece of rugged coastal golf and one of Australia’s true gems. Originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 1988, the course embodies the raw, untamed beauty of links-style golf, where the wind, terrain, and imagination shape every shot.
From the opening tee, golfers are treated to sweeping views of Bass Strait, with rolling fairways cut through native scrub and perched greens that seem to hang over the edge of the continent. The layout rewards bold play and punishes hesitation; firm, fast turf and cunningly placed bunkers make precision and strategy essential. Holes like the par-4 7th, bending toward the ocean, and the breathtaking par-3 16th, played across a cliff-top chasm, capture the Old Course’s exhilarating blend of danger and beauty.
The Old Course has long been a fixture in Australia’s top rankings, celebrated for its natural flow and relentless challenge. It remains a bucket-list experience for those seeking true coastal golf: wild, windy, and wonderfully unforgiving.
